TSRC SETS NEW DIRECTIONS FOR SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH
|
|
TSRC sincerely thanks all of you who completed the survey we sent out last winter. It enabled us to determine that indeed we are meeting our mission.
In ninety-five-percent of the 147 completed surveys, scientists “agreed” or “strongly agreed” that TSRC sets new directions for science; 4% were “neutral.” This statement was statistically analyzed in a case study by Purdue University students who compared this answer with other questions on the survey and found that “many other factors were significantly correlated with TSRC setting new directions for scientific research.”

Pinhead Town Talks
At all of the ten 2009 Town Talks, Nana mentioned the 25th anniversary to the audience, and gave them some history of the organization. Two talks were earmarked as special 25th anniversary presentations. One was the Annual Berry Lecture, given by MIT Professor Daniel Nocera on “Energy: A Carbon-Neutral Energy Supply for Each Individual (x 6 Billion People)” to an audience of 216 people. The other was “Chaos Theory: Weather Prediction and Climate Change” by William Reinhardt, University of Washington and past president of TSRC, to an audience of 180 people. Bill’s talk was followed by a panel discussion that included TSRC scientist, Mark Ratner and two University of Arizona scientists, Julia Cole and Jonathan Overpeck. Both events were tremendously well received.
The Cincinnati Dancing Pigs Jug Band
Longtime TSRC participant, Thomas Beck, brought his Cincinnati Dancing Pigs Jug Band to Telluride to join the 25th anniversary celebration, thanks to the generous donations of many TSRC board members, past presidents, and participants. They opened for Nocera’s Berry Lecture at the Conference Center and played at the August 4th TSRC picnic.

TELLURIDE SCHOOL ON THEORETICAL CHEMISTRY (TSTC)
|
|
The first bi-annual Telluride School on Theoretical Chemistry (TSTC) was an intensive six-days of lectures and problem solving, but not without its share of fun and mishaps. In keeping with a longstanding TSRC tradition, a group of TSTC hikers ran into strong hail, rain, and cold temperatures as they hiked up Gold Hill from the gondola station. The accompanying lightning shut down the gondola, stranding the TSTC hikers in the Mountain Village for a few hours comforted only by hot chocolate and beer. Surprisingly, they returned on time to continue the Tuesday sessions and take part in the Pinhead Town Talk.
The next school will be held July 11-15, 2011 just prior to the American Conference on Theoretical Chemistry, which is being organized by TSRC board member, Peter Rossky. It will be held for the first time in Telluride since its inception in 1951 (ACTC).

REMEMBER TSRC FOR YOUR END OF YEAR GIVING
Support scholarships for young scientists and the Town Talks
TSRC is actively trying to support the inclusion of more young scientists, postdocs, and grad students. Also in need of support is TSRC's public outreach program, the Pinhead Town Talks. For the past four years, the Telluride Mountain Village Owners Association (TMVOA) has fully supported the Town Talks with grants of about $40,000 annually. Because the real estate transfer taxes that have supported their funding of Telluride non-profits has dried up, they will contribute at most 20% of this funding level to the Town Talks in 2010. Show your support of this important program that fosters a more science-literate society. Your tax-deductible donations will be greatly appreciated.

| IN MEMORIAM |
Victoria Buch, Hebrew University Professor TSRC Organizer

TSRC lost a long-time friend and supporter, and the world lost a brilliant scientist and compassionate humanitarian, when Victoria Buch passed away on June 21, 2009. Over the last decade, Viki frequently made the long journey from Jerusalem to Telluride to participate in TSRC workshops, and during the last eight years she organized a biennial workshop on the properties of liquid and solid aqueous interfaces, which regularly attracted one of TSRC's largest contingent of scientists from around the globe. Viki was respected and loved by her colleagues who appreciated the rigor and creativity of her research, and cherished her contributions to the spirited discussions that are the hallmark of TSRC workshops. Although not well known to all her scientific colleagues, in addition to being an exceptionally creative, hard-working, and successful scientist by any measure, Viki tirelessly dedicated herself to the advancement of the rights and wellbeing of the Palestinians in the Occupied Territories. Most of us would be content to make meaningful and lasting contributions in one arena. Viki showed us that it is possible to do much more. She will be sorely missed by all who had the good fortune to know her.
Sincerely, Doug Tobias, UC Irvine TSRC Board Member
Hilary Fitzgerald, Pinhead Institute Program Director

On Friday, August 21st Pinhead Institute’s Programming Director, Hilary Fitzgerald, had a fatal car accident while returning from a trip she had been guiding on the Gunnison River. Hilary was not only an incredible asset to our Pinhead family in her professionalism and enthusiasm for introducing young minds to the wonders of science, but was also a warm and wonderful friend, co-worker, and amazing young woman with a bright future. I know all of us who had the opportunity to know and work with Hilary will miss her tremendously. She was only with us for a short while, but she will live on with us for many years to come.
Sincerely, Sonchia Jilek Pinhead Institute Executive Director

FIRST TSRC SCIENCE COMMUNICATIONS INTERN
2009 marked the first year TSRC hired a Science Communications Intern to manage the PR for the Town Talks. Lisa Chistadore, Boston University Chemistry PhD candidate, came our way through BU’s Department Chair and TSRC past president, John Straub. She brilliantly researched and wrote 20 articles for the Telluride Daily Planet and the Telluride Watch, and edited them for radio, which she (or Nana) announced weekly. A gifted writer, thorough researcher, and thoughtful human being, Lisa has all the skills to become highly successful science writer, should she choose that path. Click here to read Lisa’s articles
